If you’re planning a fall vacation to Asheville, chances are you’ve imagined the same breathtaking scene that draws visitors from around the world each October: layers of Blue Ridge Mountains glowing in brilliant shades of crimson, amber, and gold beneath a crisp Carolina sky and today, I’m here to share some of the Best Places to See Fall Color in Asheville.
As someone who was born and raised in Asheville, I’ve spent my entire life exploring these mountains. Long before I became a professional photographer, weekends were spent hiking hidden trails, chasing waterfalls, and watching the leaves change from overlook after overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Today, after photographing families here for more than 17 years, I still find myself discovering new corners of these mountains to fall in love with each autumn.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend getaway or a week-long family vacation, these are my favorite places to experience fall color in and around Asheville.

When Is Peak Fall Color in Asheville?
The answer for where the Best Places to See Fall Color in Asheville depends on elevation!
Unlike many destinations where the leaves seem to change all at once, Western North Carolina experiences a gradual wave of color as autumn moves down the mountains.
As a general guide:
- Early October: Highest elevations begin changing.
- Mid-October: Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks become increasingly colorful.
- Mid – Late October: Peak color reaches many of the Parkway’s most iconic mountain vistas.
- Late October – Early November: Lower elevations, downtown Asheville, and the French Broad River valley reach their peak.
This extended season means there’s beautiful foliage to enjoy throughout much of October and into November, though the timing can shift slightly depending on weather conditions each year.
1. Blue Ridge Parkway
If you only have time for one destination during your trip, make it the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Often called “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Parkway offers some of the most spectacular mountain scenery anywhere in the country. Every curve reveals another panoramic overlook, making it easy to spend an entire day exploring.
One of the things I love most is that no two overlooks are exactly alike. Some feature endless rolling mountain ridges fading into soft blue layers, while others overlook colorful valleys filled with hardwood forests at peak color.
Because I’ve spent decades exploring this road, it’s also where I photograph many of my family portrait sessions each fall. The variety of scenery means every session feels unique.
Best time to visit: The weekends are gonna be busy regardless of time of day but early mornings on weekdays will have far less traffic which will feel more serene with beautiful soft, morning light.
2. Craggy Gardens
Just north of Asheville along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Craggy Gardens is one of the area’s most beloved fall destinations.
The short walk from the visitor area rewards you with sweeping 360-degree mountain views that seem to stretch forever.
October mornings often begin with low clouds drifting through the valleys below, creating an unforgettable landscape that photographers dream about.
Families appreciate that the trail is relatively short, making it manageable even with younger children.
3. Graveyard Fields
Graveyard Fields offers something many Parkway overlooks don’t—waterfalls surrounded by vibrant fall foliage.
The relatively easy hiking trails wind through colorful forests before reaching cascading waterfalls and open mountain meadows.
It’s especially beautiful after recent rainfall when the waterfalls are flowing at their strongest.
Wear sturdy shoes, as portions of the trail can become muddy during the fall.
4. Black Balsam Knob
If you’re looking for the iconic “mountains as far as you can see” view, Black Balsam is hard to beat.
The high elevation creates dramatic vistas unlike almost anywhere else in the Southeast. This is one of my personal favorites because it really is one of the Best Places to See Fall Color in Asheville!
Golden grasses, evergreen ridges, and colorful hardwood forests combine to create one of the most photographed landscapes in North Carolina.
The hike is moderate but well worth the effort.
Bring a jacket—even sunny October afternoons can feel cool at this elevation.
5. Looking Glass Rock Overlooks
One of my favorite scenic drives takes visitors through Pisgah National Forest toward Looking Glass Rock.
Rather than hiking the summit, many visitors enjoy the roadside overlooks that provide incredible mountain views without a strenuous climb.
The drive itself becomes part of the experience as winding mountain roads pass beneath vibrant hardwood forests.
This area is particularly beautiful in mid to late October.
6. Pisgah National Forest
If you’re searching for waterfalls, rivers, hiking trails, and endless fall color, Pisgah National Forest deserves an entire day.
Highlights include:
- Looking Glass Falls
- Sliding Rock
- Davidson River
- Moore Cove Falls
- Pink Beds Loop Trail
The changing leaves reflected in the rivers create some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll encounter during your visit.
7. The North Carolina Arboretum
For families with young children or visitors seeking an easier walking experience, the North Carolina Arboretum is a wonderful choice, especially during the 3 – 4the week of October!
Beautiful gardens, paved walking paths, mountain views, and colorful native trees make it one of the most accessible places to enjoy autumn.
It’s also an excellent option if you’re hoping for a slower-paced afternoon after several days of mountain driving.
8. Biltmore Estate
Few places feel more magical during the fall than Biltmore Estate, especially during the 4th week of October! Biltmore really is one of the Best Places to See Fall Color in Asheville at the end of October!
The historic grounds become even more spectacular as thousands of trees surrounding the estate turn brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and red.
Spend time exploring:
- The gardens
- Bass Pond
- Deer Park
- Antler Hill Village
- Winery
If you’re already planning to tour the estate, allow extra time simply to enjoy the grounds.
9. Mount Mitchell State Park
Standing at 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River (which means you should visit during the first week of October!)
Because of its elevation, fall color typically arrives earlier here than in Asheville itself.
On a clear day, the panoramic views seem endless.
Bring warm clothing—the summit is often considerably cooler than downtown Asheville.
10. Beaver Lake
One of Asheville’s quieter hidden gems, Beaver Lake offers peaceful walking trails and beautiful reflections of colorful trees across the water.
It’s particularly lovely in the early morning when the lake is calm and the surrounding mountains are reflected on its surface.
If you’re looking to escape some of the larger crowds, this is a wonderful place to spend an hour, especially in the fourth week of October! .

After spending a lifetime in these mountains, here are a few things I always tell visiting friends:
Start Earlier Than You Think
The most beautiful light happens shortly after sunrise, and you’ll enjoy quieter roads and easier parking.
Visit During the Week
Weekdays are dramatically less crowded than weekends, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Dress in Layers
Temperatures can vary by more than 15 degrees depending on elevation.
Slow Down
Some of my favorite memories have happened between destinations, not at them.
Pull over often. Take the scenic route. Enjoy the overlooks.
