Each October, families from across the country travel to Asheville hoping to experience everything that makes Western North Carolina one of America’s favorite fall destinations and for parents traveling to Asheville, planning for Things to Do with Kids in Asheville this Fall is top of mind!
The Blue Ridge Mountains burst into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. Apple orchards fill with fresh cider and warm donuts. Pumpkin patches welcome excited little ones, and scenic drives become unforgettable family adventures.
As someone who was born and raised in Asheville—and who also photographs dozens of families here every fall—I often get asked the same question:
“What are the best things to do with kids in Asheville in the Fall?”
After spending my childhood exploring these mountains and raising my own family here, these are the places I recommend most often.
Whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or an entire week, these family-friendly adventures will help you experience the very best of Asheville in the fall.

1. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway
If your family only does one thing while visiting Asheville this fall, make it a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Children love stopping at the overlooks, climbing on the rocks and taking in the endless mountain views.
Don’t try to rush from overlook to overlook.
Instead, pick a handful of stops, pack snacks or picnic, bring a blanket or camping chairs and let the day unfold naturally.
Some of my favorite family-friendly overlooks include:
- Craggy Gardens (easy trail for kids, great picnic spot, room to safely roam / play!)
- Mount Pisgah / Hike Mount Pisgah or Stop at the Pisgah Inn (for the restaurant & the rocking chairs looking out over the mountains!)
- View Looking Glass Rock
- Graveyard Fields
- Cowee Mountains Overlook (this is the iconic spot!)

2. Spend the Day at Sky Top Orchard
No Asheville fall vacation feels complete without visiting an apple orchard and this is by far on of the very Best Things to Do with Kids in Asheville this Fall!
Sky Top Orchard is, in my professional opinion (as a mom) the BEST! And, it has become a fall tradition for countless families thanks to:
- Apple picking
- Apple cider donuts
- Fresh cider
- Mountain views
- Hayrides
- Pumpkins
- Farm animals
- Bumble Bee Train
- Play area
- Giant slides
- Bamboo forest
Children could easily spend an entire afternoon here.

3. Explore Biltmore Estate
While the Biltmore House is certainly impressive, families often discover that children enjoy the grounds even more.
Visit:
- Antler Hill Village
- Farmyard animals
- Gardens
- Walking trails
- Ice cream shop
- Winery lawn
Allow plenty of time to simply be there and explore.

4. Visit the WNC Nature Center
One of Asheville’s hidden gems, the Western North Carolina Nature Center introduces children to native Appalachian wildlife and it is certainly one of the best Things to Do with Kids in Asheville this Fall!
You’ll find:
- Black bears
- Red wolves
- River otters
- Cougars
- Birds of prey
- Farm animals
It’s educational without feeling like school.

5. Chase Waterfalls in Pisgah National Forest
Western North Carolina is famous for its waterfalls.
Fortunately, several require very little hiking.
Perfect options for families include:
Bring waterproof shoes—you’ll probably end up exploring near the water.

6. Visit a Pumpkin Patch
Fall simply wouldn’t feel complete without pumpkins.
Many local farms offer:
- Corn mazes
- Hayrides
- Pumpkin picking
- Farm animals
- Seasonal treats
- Play areas
It’s one of those classic autumn traditions children remember for years.
My favorites are:

7. Explore Downtown Asheville
Kids are often surprised by how fun downtown Asheville can be.
Some favorite stops include:
Slow down, wander the streets, and let curiosity guide the afternoon! Tourism has really been down since Hurricane Helene, downtown Asheville needs you! 🫶🏻

8. Hike at the North Carolina Arboretum
The North Carolina Arboretum is perfect for families looking for an easier outdoor adventure.
Wide walking paths, beautiful gardens, colorful fall foliage, and open spaces make it ideal for younger children.
Parents appreciate that strollers are welcome on many paths.

9. Have a Picnic with a Mountain View
This may sound simple, but it’s one of my favorite recommendations.
Pick up sandwiches from a local deli (I love Roman’s!)
Grab a blanket.
Find a scenic overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Turn off your phones.
Sit together.
Sometimes the moments children remember most aren’t the expensive attractions—they’re the quiet ones spent together.

10. Schedule Family Photos While You’re Here
Every October, I photograph dozens of families who tell me the same thing afterward:
“We’re so glad we decided to do this.”
Vacations have a wonderful way of slowing life down a little bit.
You’re together.
You’re (hopefully) relaxed.
You’re making memories.
Why not preserve them?
The Blue Ridge Mountains provide one of the most spectacular natural backdrops anywhere in America, making Asheville the perfect place for your family portraits.
As an Asheville native and third-generation photographer, I’ve spent a lifetime exploring these mountains. I guide families to breathtaking locations with incredible views, beautiful light, and room for children to simply be themselves.
Many families visiting Asheville choose one evening of their vacation (I recommend one of the first days, just incase it rains us out, we’ll still have more days to get it in!) for portraits because they know these are the memories they can take with them after the trip ends!
