Why are people Visiting Asheville in October?
October is widely considered the most beautiful month of the year in Asheville.
The summer humidity has faded, daytime temperatures are comfortable, and the Blue Ridge Mountains become a living canvas painted with spectacular fall color. Every winding mountain road seems to reveal another postcard-worthy overlook, while downtown Asheville comes alive with outdoor dining, local festivals, and visitors soaking in the season.
October is also one of the busiest times of year, so planning ahead is essential. Hotels, restaurants, and popular attractions often book weeks—or even months—in advance.
What Is the Weather Like in Asheville in October?
October offers some of the most comfortable weather of the year.
Average daytime temperatures:
- Highs: 65–72°F
- Lows: 42–50°F
Mountain weather changes quickly, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where temperatures can be 10–15 degrees cooler than downtown Asheville.
I always recommend packing:
- Light sweaters
- A warm jacket for sunrise and sunset
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Layers you can easily add or remove
- Neutral, Jewel Tone or Earth Toned clothing if you’re planning family portraits!
When Do the Leaves Change in Asheville?
One of the questions I’m asked most every fall is:
“When is peak fall color in Asheville?”
The answer depends on elevation.
Because Asheville sits at varying elevations, the mountains change gradually over several weeks.
Generally speaking:
Early October
Higher Elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway starts becoming vibrant (Craggy Gardens, Mount Mitchell, etc)
Mid-October
Peak color arrives across much of the Parkway and many surrounding mountain overlooks.
Late October
Color begins moving into downtown Asheville and lower elevations.
If your goal is experiencing those iconic panoramic mountain views covered in vibrant color, mid to late October is typically your best bet!
