There are few places in Western North Carolina that lend themselves to romance quite like Biltmore Estate. With its historic architecture, sweeping mountain views, manicured grounds, and acres of open countryside, the estate offers an incredible variety of backdrops for couples planning Biltmore Estate Engagement Photos in Asheville.

For this recent Biltmore Estate Engagement Session, our couple wanted photographs that felt romantic and beautiful without feeling overly formal or posed. They wanted movement, laughter, connection, and a little playfulness woven throughout their portraits—and Biltmore gave us the perfect setting to create exactly that.

Romantic Engagement Photos at Biltmore House

We began around Biltmore House, taking advantage of the incredible architecture that makes this location instantly recognizable.

The stone façade, grand staircases, terraces, archways, and European-inspired details add a sense of history and sophistication to engagement portraits without taking the focus away from the couple themselves. Rather than creating a series of traditional posed photographs, we incorporated plenty of movement—walking together, laughing, pulling each other close, and simply enjoying the experience.

The result was a gallery that felt playful, romantic, and elevated, with the unmistakable architecture of Biltmore Estate woven into the story.

For couples who are traveling to Asheville or simply want their engagement portraits to feel distinctly connected to Western North Carolina, it is difficult to imagine a more iconic setting.

From Historic Architecture to the Open Countryside

One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions at Biltmore Estate is the sheer variety available within a single property.

After photographing around Biltmore House, we traded the formal architecture and manicured grounds for something completely different: the expansive fields on the back side of the estate near The Inn on Biltmore Estate.

Here, the feeling of the session changed entirely.

Open fields, rolling countryside, distant mountains, and an enormous Carolina sky gave us room to create portraits that felt relaxed and wonderfully romantic. The couple could walk, run, laugh, dance, and interact naturally while the landscape provided a beautiful sense of scale.

Moving between these two areas allowed us to create an engagement gallery with two distinct looks: the historic elegance of Biltmore House and the softer, more organic beauty of the estate’s countryside.

Engagement Photos That Feel Like You

Engagement portraits should be beautiful, but they should also feel like the people in them.

My approach to engagement photography is to offer enough direction that you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to stand, while still leaving plenty of space for genuine interaction. Some of the best photographs happen in the moments between the poses—the laugh that happens when something goes wrong, the way you naturally reach for one another, or the expression that appears just before a kiss.

For this couple, that meant creating a session with plenty of movement and personality rather than relying on stiff, overly posed portraits. They also wanted playful movement in their photographs and I think we nailed it!

The final gallery feels sophisticated enough to match the grandeur of Biltmore, but still warm, joyful, playful, and unmistakably theirs.

Planning an Engagement Session at Biltmore Estate

If you’re newly engaged and considering engagement photos in Asheville, NC, Biltmore Estate offers an extraordinary amount of variety. Depending on the season and the vision for your session, portraits can incorporate historic architecture, formal gardens, mountain views, open fields, wooded areas, and the pastoral landscapes that make the estate so beautiful.

It’s also an especially wonderful option for couples planning a destination wedding or Asheville getaway who want photographs that immediately capture a sense of place.

As an Asheville native and veteran photographer who has spent the last seventeen years photographing couples and families at Biltmore Estate and throughout Western North Carolina, I love helping clients choose the locations, timing, and overall feel that will make their session their own.

Asheville Engagement Photographer

Fun Fact! I am a third generation photographer and have been working professionally for the last seventeen years! I spent the first 10 -12 years of my career identifying as a Wedding Photographer! When I became a mom, my priorities began to shift and when my son went to kindergarten, my weekends became incredibly valuable to me — so I moved away from shooting Weddings and shifted my focus to Families, Editorial Maternity Portraits, Fine Art Newborn Portraits, Baby Milestone’s and Cake Smash Portraits, etc. While I don’t really shoot too many Weddings these days, I still LOVE photographing couples in love and I will still occasionally take the right wedding (a super cool, kind couple, a fancy venue / somewhere beautiful that I want to shoot at or if I get to spend 8-12hrs working with my friends!)

At Asheville Portrait Company, engagement sessions are designed to create more than a handful of photographs for a save-the-date. They’re an opportunity to slow down, celebrate this season together, and create beautiful imagery of the two of you before the whirlwind of the wedding day arrives.

And when you have a setting as extraordinary as Biltmore Estate, you don’t have to choose between grand and romantic or relaxed and playful.

You can have both!

If you’re planning a proposal or engagement session OR a family portrait session in Asheville and have been dreaming of Biltmore Estate Engagement Photos, I’d love to help you create a portrait experience that feels beautiful, natural, and completely personal to you.
