A Gorgeous Early Autumn Portrait Session in Asheville

When most people imagine Family Photos at Biltmore Estate in September, they might picture vibrant red and golden leaves blanketing the grounds. While October certainly steals the show, there’s something incredibly special about early autumn at Biltmore Estate that often gets overlooked. September offers warm golden evenings, lush green landscapes, beautiful gardens still in bloom, and soft light that photographs beautifully. The trees begin hinting at the season ahead, the crowds are generally lighter than peak leaf season, and the estate has a quieter, more relaxed feel.

This sweet mother / son duo traveled from East Tennessee for their early Autumn Portrait Session at Biltmore Estate! I’ve had the pleasure of photographing these guys several times over the years and Patricia always nails their wardrobe, it was perfect for an autumn photoshoot at Biltmore!

Why Biltmore Estate Is One of the Most Beautiful Places for Family Photos in Asheville

Few locations capture the elegance and grandeur of Asheville quite like Biltmore Estate.

Designed by George Vanderbilt in the late 1800s, the estate combines timeless architecture with meticulously maintained gardens, rolling meadows, ancient trees, and sweeping Blue Ridge Mountain views.

It’s a location that feels equally at home in every season.

While many photographers focus exclusively on the mansion itself, one of the things I love most about photographing families at Biltmore is the incredible variety the estate offers.

Within a single session, we can create portraits featuring:

  • Historic architecture
  • Tree-lined pathways
  • Open lawns
  • Garden landscapes
  • Mountain views
  • Romantic stone walls
  • Beautiful natural light

The result is a gallery filled with elegant, timeless images that feel distinctly Asheville.

September at Biltmore Estate

Although the calendar says autumn, September in Asheville often feels like a gentle transition between seasons.

The afternoons are still warm.

The gardens remain vibrant.

Towering hardwood trees are still rich shades of green, with just the earliest hints of gold beginning to appear.

Rather than the dramatic fall foliage of October, Family Photos at Biltmore Estate in September offers something different—lush landscapes, glowing evening light, and a softness that feels both classic and timeless.

For families traveling before the busy October rush, it’s an incredibly underrated time for portraits.

A Relaxed Evening Together

One of my favorite things about this session wasn’t the scenery.

It was watching this mother / son duo simply enjoy hanging out with each other!

Together, we explored the grounds and laughed together as we wandered through the estate. There was no pressure to perform or pose perfectly.

What was really special is that this session was shot in the fall season following Hurricane Helene and the grounds were like a ghost-town at this time of day, it felt like we had the entire estate all to ourselves!

Why September Is a Wonderful Time for Family Portraits

October receives much of the attention in Asheville, but September has several advantages that many visitors don’t realize.

Beautiful Evening Light

The sun begins setting a little earlier, creating warm, flattering light for portraits.

Lush Landscapes

The estate remains vibrant and green, with gardens still full of life.

Comfortable Pace

While September is certainly popular, it tends to feel less hectic than the peak weeks of October.

Easier Travel

Hotels, restaurants, and attractions are often easier to book before the height of fall tourism.

For families planning a mountain vacation, September offers the perfect balance of beautiful weather and relaxed surroundings.

What to Wear for Biltmore Estate Family Photos

Biltmore’s timeless architecture pairs beautifully with classic, refined wardrobe choices.

I generally recommend:

  • Cream
  • Soft, Dust blue
  • Camel
  • Sage green
  • Navy
  • Warm neutrals
  • Muted Color Tones

Flowing dresses, tailored clothing, textured fabrics, and classic silhouettes complement the elegance of the estate while allowing the scenery to remain the focus.

Avoid bold neon colors, large logos, or busy patterns that distract from both your family and the historic surroundings.

Why Families Choose Biltmore Estate

Every family has a different vision for their portraits.

Some dream of dramatic mountain overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Others are drawn to the timeless beauty and refined elegance of Biltmore Estate.

For families who appreciate classic architecture, beautiful gardens, and a sense of history, it’s difficult to imagine a more iconic portrait location in Western North Carolina.

The estate offers a sophisticated backdrop that feels just as beautiful today as it will decades from now when these photographs are passed down to future generations.

Planning Family Photos During Your Asheville Vacation

Many of my clients are visiting Asheville for the very first time.

Rather than trying to squeeze portraits into an already busy itinerary, I typically recommend scheduling your session after you’ve had a day or two to settle into your vacation.

By then, everyone has relaxed.

The children have adjusted.

Parents aren’t rushing from one attraction to the next.

That slower pace almost always leads to more natural, joyful photographs.

Whether you’re spending a weekend exploring Biltmore Estate, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, or enjoying downtown Asheville, setting aside one evening for family portraits allows you to preserve not just the scenery, but the memories you’re creating here together.

An Asheville Native’s Perspective

Having grown up in Asheville, Biltmore has always been part of my story.

I’ve watched the gardens change with the seasons, seen the mountains transform from lush summer greens to brilliant autumn color, and photographed families here for more than seventeen years.

Every visit feels a little different.

The light changes.

The gardens evolve.

The seasons shift.

Yet the beauty of the estate remains timeless.

It’s one of the reasons I continue recommending it to families looking for an elegant portrait experience that truly reflects the charm of Asheville.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is September a good time for family photos at Biltmore Estate?

Absolutely. September offers beautiful golden light, lush landscapes, warm weather, and a quieter atmosphere before Asheville’s busiest fall season begins.

Do the leaves change in September?

Usually not. Most trees remain green, although subtle hints of early autumn begin appearing later in the month, especially at higher elevations.

Should we choose Biltmore Estate or the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Both are beautiful, but they offer very different experiences.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is ideal if you’re dreaming of expansive mountain vistas and dramatic landscapes. Biltmore Estate is perfect for families who love timeless architecture, manicured gardens, and an elegant, historic setting.

When should we schedule our portrait session?

Golden hour—the hour before sunset—is my favorite time to photograph families at Biltmore. The soft evening light complements both the estate’s architecture and the surrounding landscape beautifully.

A note about Scheduling Biltmore Portrait Sessions:

Unfortunately, Biltmore Portrait Sessions are only available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday late afternoon / early evenings due to the new Luminere nighttime attraction at Biltmore.
